A story to delight both young and young-at-heart readers
This book was a delight to read. Through the eyes of Anne Katrine, I relived many of the dreams and fears I once held as a child. I experienced the wonder of shrinking myself to a diminutive size, flying on the back of an owl, conversing with animals, and enjoying a friendship with magical elves named Yul and Nissa. Although many details of the story are fantastical, the author grounds the story in a specific locale by sprinkling in references to the Philadelphia area. I especially loved her imaginative portrayal of Nissa who is introduced wearing hot pink knee socks, lime green sneakers, and a Phillies baseball cap!
Aside from being a captivating adventure, I would recommend this book for its educational value. It gently teaches important life lessons, such as how to manage one’s inevitable mistakes along the way. As Yul reminds Nissa, “What’s done is done,” and the two set out to remedy the mistake together. The author also inserts interesting tidbits about Danish lore within the story, introducing readers to Runic Stones which figured in early Danish history. Finally, the author clearly loves the richness of language and weaves a game of puns between Anne Katrine and her magical friends which enhances the playfulness of their relationship.

Magical!
A partnership with a pair of new friends reveals untold possibilities for this smart and resourceful ten-year-old as she remains focused on her goal and makes her way toward achieving it.
Delightful on so many levels!
I love this book so much I purchased 4 copies - one for me and three for gifts. This is a delightful, gentle fantasy story that is also rich in very accessible life lessons for kids living in a tough world today. Anna Katrine, our 11 year old heroine, has to deal with parents who are suddenly missing, a mean Aunt and cousins she's been left with, and loneliness. She finds solace and joy through new friends with whom she shares fun activities and adventures, and coping skills from the memory of her late grandmother's wise counsel. There is humor and wisdom throughout, along with great illustrations. I can't wait to see what happens in the second book!
An Adventurous fairy tale - with elves, magic, and true friends
The Very Small Adventures of Anne Katrine is a delightful children’s chapter book, filled with magic, friendship, and escapades. This Harry Potter-like fairy tale begins shortly before Anne Katrine’s eleventh birthday, a date upon which her grandmother has promised to share a magical secret. Unfortunately, things do not go as planned. However, the imaginative Anne Katrine courageously faces all challenges with the help of her newly found friends. Whether soaring through the air on the back of an owl, befriending elves or sharing a meal inside the trunk of a tree, I highly recommend this enjoyable and playful book, and am looking forward to Anne Katrine’s next adventure!
Travel to the magical world of Anne Katrine
This is a great book to bring back childhood memories of secrets, magic, and adventure. If you stay up late and read it in the dark with a flashlight, you will magically be 11 years old again, like Anne. Or perhaps, find a young one to read it to with great drama and incite their love of reading. A wonderful gift for a 9 to 14 year old.
